Impala
Impulse Response Measurement
Impala is Focus Fidelity's impulse response measurement application, free to download for Windows and macOS. It has everything you need, and nothing you don't, for taking measurements for digital room correction.
Key Features
- Measurements of the left and right channels, taken at multiple positions, are saved to a single file (*.ffm) that opens in Finetic, Focus Fidelity's filter design application.
- The *.ffm file includes the microphone calibration and the relative timing of the left and right channels, for a seamless workflow with Finetic.
- The test signal can be played from Impala or from third-party software.
- Measurements can also be exported as *.wav files for use with third-party software, with the microphone calibration applied.
- Clock drift correction, for measurement microphones and playback devices that run on separate clocks, such as a USB microphone.
- On Windows, audio hardware is accessed through the WASAPI exclusive mode interface or ASIO, eliminating issues with Windows audio mixers and sample rate converters.
- Measurements can be taken with a correction filter applied. The filter is applied to the test signal the same way it is to music, so you can verify how the filter performs.
- A pink noise generator and sound pressure level meter are included for setting the volume level.
- Tested with miniDSP UMIK-1 and UMIK-2 microphones and XMOS-based USB audio interfaces.
Taking Measurements
Impala plays a swept sine wave through each loudspeaker and records the result with a measurement microphone. The first measurement is at the main listening position, with the microphone at ear height; the rest are arranged around it to cover the area you listen from.
What You Need
- A PC running Windows 10 or 11, or a Mac running macOS Ventura 13.1 or later, on Intel or Apple Silicon. See the system requirements.
- A measurement microphone. A USB microphone such as the miniDSP UMIK-1 or UMIK-2 is the simplest; the resources page lists suitable microphones and calibration services.
- The DAC or audio interface you already use for music playback.
